Background of the Study
Bukkuyum Local Government Area (LGA) in Zamfara State, located in the north-western part of Nigeria, is rich in mineral resources, especially gold. Artisanal mining has long been a livelihood for many residents, contributing significantly to the local economy. However, the sector is heavily influenced by geopolitical factors, including regional power struggles, national resource control policies, and the security dynamics in the region. The proliferation of illegal mining activities, exacerbated by weak regulatory frameworks, has led to severe environmental degradation, loss of life, and conflicts. Geopolitical factors such as state-level political support for mining, the involvement of illegal actors, and ethnic tensions in the region complicate efforts to regulate and manage the artisanal mining sector effectively. This study will explore the impact of these geopolitical factors on the artisanal mining industry in Bukkuyum LGA, with a focus on the ways in which they affect both the economy and the socio-political landscape of the area.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The artisanal mining sector in Bukkuyum LGA has grown in importance but is also riddled with challenges, such as the influx of illegal miners, conflict between local and external actors, and environmental degradation. Geopolitical factors, including state and local governance, have largely shaped the unregulated nature of the mining industry, contributing to the growth of illegal mining practices and exploitation. This study aims to evaluate the impact of these geopolitical influences on artisanal mining in Bukkuyum LGA, identifying both the negative and potential positive effects of such dynamics.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  • To examine the role of geopolitical factors in shaping artisanal mining practices in Bukkuyum LGA.

  • To assess the impact of local and state-level governance on the regulation and management of artisanal mining activities.

  • To recommend policies for mitigating the negative impact of geopolitical factors on artisanal mining in the region.

1.4 Research Questions

  • How do geopolitical factors influence artisanal mining practices in Bukkuyum LGA?

  • What role do local governance and state-level policies play in the regulation of artisanal mining in the area?

  • How can the negative impacts of geopolitical factors on artisanal mining be mitigated to ensure sustainable practices in Bukkuyum LGA?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  • Geopolitical factors significantly influence the proliferation of illegal mining activities in Bukkuyum LGA.

  • Weak local governance and inadequate state policies exacerbate the challenges facing artisanal mining in the region.

  • Stronger governance and policy frameworks can help mitigate the negative effects of geopolitical factors on artisanal mining in Bukkuyum LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how geopolitical factors, including local and state governance, impact artisanal mining in Bukkuyum LGA. It will offer insights for policymakers to improve mining practices, reduce illegal mining, and enhance the regulation of the sector for the benefit of the local economy and environment. The findings will also be valuable to local stakeholders, including artisanal miners, community leaders, and environmental advocates (Abubakar & Musa, 2024).

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on artisanal mining in Bukkuyum LGA, Zamfara State, specifically assessing the influence of geopolitical factors on the sector. Limitations may include challenges in accessing reliable data on illegal mining activities and potential bias in governmental policies and reports.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Artisanal Mining: Small-scale, often informal mining activities carried out by individuals or groups using rudimentary techniques.

  • Geopolitical Factors: Political, economic, and social influences that arise from regional and national political dynamics, affecting local governance and resource management.

  • Bukkuyum Local Government Area: A rural area in Zamfara State, Nigeria, characterized by significant artisanal gold mining activity (Abubakar & Musa, 2024).
